Don Francisco is roughly the same age his idol Groucho Marx was when he died, which is to say he is closer to ninety than eighty.

Memories of his childhood come flooding back to the old man, and he becomes Paquito—the boy and young man he once was, and whom he often wishes to remain, now that his brain has begun to fail. It is as if his existential engine were seizing up; purely a matter of age, as they say.

Living on in his childhood is not up to him; it is his mind that decides to linger in the past for a while and return to the present only when it sees fit.

Don Francisco and what sits upon his shoulders no longer function in sync; there is a misalignment for which, unfortunately, there is less and less of a solution. Consequently, the man is not truly aware of reality when he transforms into Paquito and strikes up an imaginary conversation—one that is entirely real to him—with his idolized Groucho Marx. Groucho has appeared in this final stage of his earthly stay as if by magic and has become his friend. He is a great friend, certainly, whom he treats as if he had known him for a lifetime. This familiarity reaches such a point that Groucho has become, for Don Francisco / Paquito (it is sometimes difficult to tell them apart), simply Julius: his regular companion for a chat.

And in the conversations they hold, fantasy mingles with reality, fiction with truth, and dreams with authentic existence—the life the old man has shared over eighty-some years as an inhabitant of planet Earth, living alongside his fellow human beings.

In "Conversations with Julius," the old man embarks on a journey through time, guided by a selective memory decimated by the inevitable passing of years.
